Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair This Weekend

Blog, Community News, Manhattan Beach News   |   Dunham Stewart
The 41th Annual Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair is being held on October 5-6, 2013. The popularity of the fair is explained by the fact that it attracts everyone under the sun, from families and art lovers, to free speech advocates and fair food fanatics, and those that would rather hang out in the South Bay’s favorite Beer Garden. It really is a hometown event and has mangaged to showcase it’s community feel every year in large part because this event is 100% put together and executed by a group of volunteers.
The Hometown Fair unites the community as a good portion of profits go to local charities. Since parking in Manhattan Beach is an improbable equation, there will be free parking and free shuttles running all day from 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday from the Northrop/Gruman parking lot in Redondo Beach. Although not affiliated with Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair, many folks will test their mettle at the Manhattan Beach 10k in the morning and then cool down at the fair. The Manhattan Beach Hometown 10K Run weaves throughout Manhattan Beach and garners thousands of participants each year.

There will be all of the regular Fair activities, such as Arts & Crafts, face painting and the Ring Toss. A very different sideshow at the Hometown Fair, however, is the designated Free Speech area. Here, anyone can speak their mind about literally any issue they want (although if you’re interested, you’ll have to pre-register). Besides the information below, all kinds of side events will be happening including a Amateur Art Exhibit, Toddler Trot, Circus shows, and much more. You’ll regret it if you miss the fair this year!

The Manhattan Beach Pier 1st Annual Roundhouse World Oceans Day Fundraiser.  Registration is now open for a 5K beach fun run that will be held at 9:30 on June 8, World Oceans Day at the Manhattan Beach Pier to benefit the Roundhouse Aquarium. The run/walk is being held to raise money for the Aquarium’s educational programs and will begin at the Manhattan Beach pier and proceed north on the sand to the end of Manhattan Beach and back. Help us continue our ocean education programs by participating in the fundraiser. It will aid the aquarium’s three primary programs: holding classes for over 15,000 pre-k through 12th grade students each year; operating a volunteer program that has grown to over 150 volunteers, mostly local high school students; and allowing over 125,000 members of the public to visit the aquarium free of charge seven days a week in order to interact with marine life through touch tanks, displays, and other entertaining and educational materials. For $35 entrants will receive a T-shirt, water, refreshments, and the chance to win some great prizes. Stop by the Roundhouse after the race to learn more about our oceans. To sign up, go to www.roundhouseaquarium.org or pick up a registration form at the Roundhouse Aquarium, iRunMB, or Village Runner.

Home Owners Solar Power Planning Tools

Blog, Design Tips, Manhattan Beach News   |   Dunham Stewart
Are you considering solar energy for your home, but don’t know where to start? Adding solar panels to your house can be a great way to save energy and reduce your carbon footprint. You just have to be sure you’re ready to shell out up to of $20,000 at the outset. Solar panels won’t typically start saving you money for 10-15 years, so it should be viewed as a long-term investment. Visit the California Energy Commission’s go solar California clean power estimator for a snapshot of potential costs. The estimator will show you how much you can expect to spend after applying thousands of dollars in state and federal incentives. The county also offers a very useful solar map and green planning tool to gather information about your property and see how viable an option solar power is. The solar map uses more than 250 million calculations in measuring 3,000 square miles of satellite imagery to measure the landscape for solar potential.
